One of the biggest concerns facing solar pv installation is one you’ll have no control over: the weather. High speed wind and hail are some of the biggest factors facing consumers when making the decision to go green. The Insurance Journal reports a staggering state record in damages after racking up an estimated $1.36 billion in damages to vehicles and homes. This figure is significantly higher than a hail storm which struck Fort Worth in 1995 amassing $1.1 billion in damage. Some Texas residents reported softball sized hail reaching a length of 4.5 inches.

What can your clients do when faced with hail damage?

Most homeowner’s insurance covers solar panels if they’ve been claimed as part of the property. Your client will want to call them immediately and file a claim. In most cases, the insurance company might opt to replace the solar panels directly, however, they may just cut a check.

If your client doesn’t have or wants to avoid going through insurance, there may be manufacturer’s warranty which could potentially cover the expenses. Your client may only want to go this route if the panels have obtained minor damage. In some situations, they might even recommend replacing the outer pane of glass. A word of caution: if the glass pane is installed incorrectly, it might cause a build up of humidity underneath the glass reducing the amount of power the system will generate.

As always, it’s recommended that your client check with their homeowner’s policy to verify solar pv installations are covered when declared as part of the home.
